Keeping Closeted

Which parts of you are currently keeping closeted?

*Sexual orientation?

*Sexual desire?

*Gender orientation?

*Gender expression?

But it's not just about sex and gender.

We might "closet" any aspect of ourselves we think aren't good enough or that others can't afford to know.

It's often a pragmatic choice to preserve our safety, dignity, or reputation.

It's not a moral issue, but there are consequences. And we own those consequences when we choose to dim those parts of us we deem unworthy.

And that's why, in our own time, as we are ready, coming out of any closet is thrilling and liberating -- even as that too comes with consequences.

Because in our society freedom has a cost. And choosing to bear that burden inevitably lifts up everyone with us.
